At soon as they were inside the inn and  the door to the Abalone and Klez's shared room was closed, the Irrabask's colors shed its rainbow hue and he tossed the bag he had been carrying to the side. He plopped to the ground, all four hands pressed to his face.

Abalone nudged the Irrabask, Klez, but received no reply.

So the trabble made noise between a hum and a whistle and decided that he would take his time climbing into his nest (which once had been a bed, but now was a nest because of the pair's Lengthy stay at Creoi). He had to be careful and Deliberate to ensure he didn't send his perfectly placed pillows hurling into the abyss of the floor, but it was also a sneaky way to keeping an eye on Klez without annoying his Personal Space.

Now, seated in his nest, the Irrabask was below him; a small huddled mass of darkness and flowing patterns. Abalone bapped him with his tail.

It was on the second try that the Trabble received a reply. Something that sounded like goat cheese (what was a goat?).

Abalone leaned his head over the edge of the nest-once-bed to see if he could touch his snout to the floor (he could, and it felt like ice cream against his Not-face) but while he was doing that he Was Not Paying Attention to his tail and it somehow landed on the Irrabask’s head.

"Abalone." Klez snapped, swatting the trabble's tail off his head.

Abalone raised his head and gave a low purr.

But Klez was his Brother and sometimes brothers are grumpy.

So Abalone threw a pillow at him.

It took two more pillows and a chorus of playful chuffing from Abalone before Klez couldn’t suppress a grin and said “So you think you’re so funny?”

And because they were Brothers they had a pillow fight.

And because Abalone was his Brother, he let Klez win (just barely).

And because he was his Brother, he Listened as Klez admitted he was worried that those two trabbles and their human now hated him because he had been Rude.

Abalone was a good Listener.

I wanted to portray that Abalone has a very animal way of thinking and perceiving his world, so much of this story's style of writing is inspired by Dave Eggers book, The Eyes and the Impossible.

While Abalone's perception is very animal/dog-like (and I imagine that other trabble's, likely including Buttercorn, share some elements of this perspective, especially as it's cannon to Ranebopets that Trabbles have a dog-like intelligence level), similar to a dog, Abalone has an uncanny ability to recognize other's emotions and patience for helping others navigate them.
